Mycotoxin Binders
Mycotoxins are produced by moulds and fungi which are commonly found in feeds and field crops such as grass, cereals and maize. Moist feeds such as brewers grains, potato, bread and cereal based feeds are often a host for moulds. Any animal feed is potentially prone to mould growth particularly if it's not stored in ideal conditions.
Unfortunately, seemingly clean food can contain mycotoxins as the amount of mould required is tiny, and often, not visible to the naked eye. Feeding mycotoxins to stock can cause a wide range of symptoms, the most common are:
- Reduced intakes/milk yields
- Scouring
- Abortions
- Mastitis/high cell counts
- Sore hocks
The Mycotoxins most associated with animal feed are;
- Aflatoxin
- T2-toxin
- Don/vomitoxin
- Ochratoxin
- Fumonisin
- Zearalenone
Each mycotoxin is produced by a specific mould and will cause particular symptoms. As a result, any treatment for mycotoxins needs to provide a broad spectrum of activity to ensure that all of the likely mycotoxins are inhibited effectively.
