Salt Products
Salt is the first limiting mineral in all species. It is essential to promote saliva production and ensure optimum function of the digestive system. Animals that are deficient in salt will often be seen chewing wood or attempting to drink urine from other animals (both sources of salt).
Sources of Salt
Salt is normally mined or excavated from natural reserves that are found in most countries. In warmer regions it can often be found in naturally occurring or man-made salt 'pans'. Seawater enters these pans which are then dammed. Hot weather evaporates the water leaving the salt as a residue. Salt is also produced as a by product from de-salination plants. Raw salt can vary in colour, typically red/brown, grey, or white. The colour is largely related to the content of overlying soils. It has often been suggested that red/brown salt has high levels of Iron. Dairy Direct has carried out lab analysis which indicate that there is negligible difference in the amount of iron and other minerals in all sources of raw salt. (Lab results available upon request).
Types of Salt
Most salt is excavated or mined. This process is usually mechanical however, in some third world countries, it is still carried out manually. This 'raw' salt is in the form of varying sized lumps which are graded and then sold as Lump Rock Salt. After excavation, the raw salt is milled and sieved. The resulting product is sold as Ground Rock Salt. Ground Rock Salt is then dried and purified to create PDV Salt (Pure Dried Vacuum Salt). PDV salt can be compressed, typically into 10kg blocks, to make Salt Licks and Mineralised Salt Licks.
