Fats & Oils

Adding fat to the diet of high yielding dairy cows is now common place in many herds.

During the first 80 – 100 days of lactation, the energy demand of most cows will exceed the energy intake.  This can result in excess weight loss, ketosis, reduced fertility, and decreased milk yield.

Traditional energy sources, such as cereals, silages, molasses, etc are unlikely to provide the energy density required in early lactation, and that’s where fats have an important role to play.

Fats fall into two main categories, protected and non-protected.

Protected Fats

Protected Fats (by-pass fats) comprise of two main groups:

Calcium Soaps (Dairylac)

Calcium Soaps are produced by treating PFAD (palm fatty acid distillate) with calcium hydroxide.  This process reduces degradation and ensures that most of the fat will 'by-pass' the rumen.

Calcium Soaps are generally the most  widely used protected fat.  They are sold under a number of brand names.

High C 16 Fat Prills  (Bergafat, RP10 Energiser, Butterfat Extra, etc)

These fats are protected because of their high melting point.  The high levels of C16 Palmitic Acid will generally help maintain and improve butterfat levels and milk proteins.

High C16 fats are more expensive than Calcium Soaps and, accordingly, are used in situations where butterfats and milk protein levels are important.

Non-Protected Fats

Fats within this category include Butta Up Platinium, Milk Plus, Galaxy and Dynalac.

These products are typically 50% Fat and are made by mixing blended fats with a carrier ( Palm Kernal Meal, Wheatfeed, etc).  The oils and fats used in these products can be varied to cater for specific requirements, eg: improved yield, boost butterfats and increase milk proteins, etc

Pure Oils

These include Fish Oil, Linseed Oil, and Cod Liver Oil

Pure oils are normally included in the diet for specific purposes, rather than simply as a source of energy.
