Why Feed Minerals?

A fully balanced mineral / vitamin supplement is vital for all high performing Dairy, Beef, Sheep and Goat Herds. Acute deficiencies will seriously impact upon production levels, fertility, and general well being. Minor deficiencies will impair performance and can create many sub-clinical conditions.

The most common problems associated with mineral deficiencies include:

High Cell counts
Poor fertility
Retained palcenta
Milk Fever
Lameness
Low immunity

How do I choose the right supplement?

For lower performance or more extensive regimes an 'off the shelf' product may well be satisfactory.

Higher performance and more intensive systems, however, require a more structured approach based on forage analysis, blood profiles, etc. The resulting information can then be used to formulate a 'custom' mineral vitamin supplement. The actual formulation may vary during winter feeding, summer grazing, or when significant diet changes are made.

Dry Cows have very specific mineral / vitamin requirements.

Suckler Cows require a much higher level of minerals and vitamins compared to fattening animals.

Ewes and lambs (especially Ram Lambs) have specific requirements, as do Goats.

What about mineral quality?

The quality of mineral vitamin supplements can be defined in two distinct ways:

1. Bio-availability of the raw materials
Most mineral supplements are a combination of 15 – 20 different raw materials. Some manufacturers use low quality raw materials which are not easily absorbed by the animal during digestion. This keeps the price low, but represents poor value for money.

Dairy Direct uses only high bio-availability raw materials.

2. Legal Tolerances
The Feedingstuffs regulations permit significant tolerances between what is put on the label and what is actually in the bag. In some cases manufacturers are entitled to include only 50% of the declared level of some elements and yet still be legal. This may give them a significant price advantage.
